ONE/YEAR

One year ago, SPARE/WARE became an official business.

No launch party. No press release. No countdown on social. Most people didn’t notice, and that’s fine. We’re not there yet in the public eye, and we didn’t build this to be loud.

But it’s worth stopping for a minute to look at how far a year went.

One Shirt

It started with one shirt.

One design, one run, and no guarantee anyone would want it. No investors, no outside money, no safety net. Just a belief that bowling deserved better than what was out there, and a willingness to find out if anyone else felt the same way.

Enough people did.

Three Hats and Two Shirts

Then came three hats and two shirts.

Small, by any measure. But it was the first time SPARE/WARE looked like a brand instead of a single idea. Every piece had to earn its place, and every sale taught us something about what people would wear, and where.

More Than 30 Products

Today the lineup is more than 30 products.

Tees, hats, hoodies, quarter-zips, a youth collection, and limited drops that came and went. Every one of them was built the same way: slowly, on purpose, and with a reason to exist.

Along the way, the work got bigger than apparel. A portion of every sale goes to the Youth Development Fund. PINK/DROP sent $472.87 to Susan G. Komen and The Pink Fund. One shirt sends 100% of its proceeds to Landmark Community Center as it works to reopen. And we launched a new website, built to hold what this is turning into.

A Loyal Community

The products are the part you can count. The community is the part that matters.

People who bought the first shirt and came back for the next drop. People who wore it somewhere nobody bowls and answered the question “what’s SPARE/WARE?” for us. People who sent feedback, requested colors, and told us what we got wrong. Some of them have never bowled a frame.

A brand this size doesn’t survive its first year on product alone. It survives because people decide it’s worth showing up for.

Resilience

At one point this year, we went 50 days straight with at least one order every single day. It felt like the thing was finally moving on its own.

Then came almost three weeks without a single order.

Same brand. Same products. Same effort. Nothing.

That’s what the first year of a self-funded business actually looks like. The highs feel like proof. The lows feel like a verdict. Neither one is the whole story. The 50-day streak didn’t mean we’d made it, and the three weeks of silence didn’t mean we’d failed. Both meant keep going.

So we did. We kept designing, kept shipping, and kept showing up in the quiet weeks the same way we did in the busy ones. That’s Kaizen. You get a little better each time, especially when nobody’s watching.

Celebrating Quietly

So this is how we’re marking it. No sale. No confetti. Just this post.

One shirt became more than 30 products. A handful of early buyers became a community. A year that included both a 50-day streak and three silent weeks ended with SPARE/WARE still here, still building, and better than it was when it started.

To everyone who bought something, wore it, shared it, or told us what to make next: year one happened because of you.
